Selling Rosario is a narrative short film, first released in 2014. It won two jury prizes, two audience awards, and additional honors for directing and acting across 18 film festivals, including its premiere at the Napa Valley Film Festival.
A family of migrant farmworkers sends their 12-year-old daughter and her outlaw cousin into the night on the promise of a stranger. Rosario's parents believe almost anywhere else would be a better place for her to grow up. We meet the family on the day their plan will either succeed or fail.
The story began with a real place. While filming a public service campaign on a farm in California's Central Valley, we came across an abandoned migrant labor camp, evicted only days before. Frayed blankets still covered the windows, a doll rested on the floor, a bible lay open. We imagined Rosario into existence on the drive home.
The film was shot on location at Weedpatch, also known as the Arvin Federal Government Camp, a historic site built by the Farm Security Administration in 1936 to house migrant workers during the Great Depression.
